At The Clinton, we view reading a fundamental life skill. We believe that reading is one of the core learning approaches and helps children to broaden their vocabulary, develop a good imagination and readily access other curricular areas.
At The Clinton, reading is given high priority and all children are helped to foster a genuine love of books. All children receive focused guided reading sessions each week that not only teach the skills associated with reading, but also build on comprehension skills and allow discussion to take place. Children requiring more support in reading, receive daily reading sessions. In order to supplement quality first teaching in reading, the school runs a variety of intervention programmes for those children identified as requiring further support. These include Read, Write Inc, Precision Teaching, FFT and Nessy Learning.
All children visit the school library on a regular basis and are able to choose non-reading scheme books to take home. This encourages reading for pleasure and collaborative learning with a parent or carer.
We encourage parents to read with their child at home on a regular basis, this is monitored through the use of a home/school reading diary.
At The Clinton we are very fortunate to have a large number of willing volunteers who come in and listen to children in all classes read on a regular basis.
Children in Key Stage Two have the opportunity to become library assistants and support our librarian by keeping the library a vibrant and inviting environment.
